Family Day at the Market (Kansas City Historical River Market)

The group I belong to Missouri Valley Impressionist Society hosts very regular "Paint Outs" in the region. I went to one on the weekend in mid-April at the historical Kansas City River Market. It was an unseasonably warm day and the people were out in mass snatching up the beautiful fresh vegetables and taking in the sights, smells and sounds of the city's farmer's market. I set up my painting in the midst of things doing one painting to "warm up" and then started this one that captured the downtown building's masses on the horizon of the older, historical buildings ; in the foreground the temporary tents of the merchants. I painted the structures all en plein air, and then came home and added the finishing touches of the people, based on some reference photos I took. It was a fun day of painting and interacting with the public about art. ...topped off with an outstanding meal of Middle Eastern cuisine at the market!
