I have always gotten a thrill when I catch a glimpse of a Kingfisher. Usually the sighting is brief, momentarily I see them as they fly over me giving their characteristic chattering call as they disappear. Late this past winter I was off work to spend the day painting. I decided to explore a road not far from home for some plein air work. While I sat in this peaceful creek crossing, the only sound was the gentle water flowing past and the numerous birds in their morning routines. A lovely spot to paint and bird watch. I was so fortunate that in my stillness and the calm of the moment, a female Kingfisher came and roosted near me. What a gift! She stayed long enough for me to be able to finally capture some photos of this stunning birds. This painting is paying tribute to the memory of that magical moment.

I also recently learned that there is a Greek myth about the Kingfisher. As most of these stories go, it was a romantic and tragic tale, of true love, jealous gods, death, sorrow and more death...and a gift back to the lovers lost. Ultimately the lovers are turned into Kingfishers.  The woman's name was Alcyone.
