Winter Song (Song Sparrow)

While cross country skiing this little sparrow and I caught eachother's interest. It was feeding on the few grass seed heads coming through the deep snow. It was hungry and cold, but still curious enough about me that it would come closer to me rather than fly away; I skied home, grabbed my camera and skied back to the spot I had seen it. The bird wasn't there any more, but I waited patiently and called for it. It few to me and started feeding with in a few feet of me, and allowed me to take some portraits. This painting in to honor that wonderful memory when a human and a bird shared some quiet moments together on winter evening. The song of winter is one of beauty, but also one of survival.

This piece will be in my June solo exhibition at the William T. Kemper Gallery at the Kansas State University Student Union Building
