Waves of Light

It was a marvelous June morning. My painting buddy and I headed out for a location to do some plein air painting ahead of the afternoon's Symphony in the Flint Hills event. I planned where in general to head based on what I could figure out via Google Maps that should plant us well in the gorgeous scenery of the Flint Hills in Geary County, Kansas.  We turned down a side road so that we could more easily pull off and set up to paint on the side of the road. I noticed a "pre-Symphony Event" sign at one of the large ranch houses. Curious as to what was going on, and feeling bolder than usual, I pulled in their drive , asked what was going on, and if they could recommend any good painting spots down the road. Much to our surprise, the wonderful folks instead lead us up into one of their huge pastures and asked, "Is this good?" It was jaw dropping beautiful! Not just the typical lay of the land that was lovely, but the cloud and light play danced across the land further charging our creative juices. I painted a couple water colors before saying we needed to pull ourselves away from this special place and head over to the Symphony event where I had a painting up for auction. What lovely and generous people at the Moyer Ranch to bless us in such a surprising way! This is an oil painting, done in studio from the memory of that moment. A Dickcissel grasped its perch against the wind; and a Grasshopper Sparrow join in this piece, as they did out time out there. The wind was blowing strongly, causing the Symphony of Light to be music of a faster tempo!

This piece was juried into the 2017 Vision of the Flint Hills juried show at Buttonwood Art Space in Kansas City .

This piece was accepted into the juried art exhibit for the 2019 Symphony in the Flint Hills Art Exhibit and Auction (beginning bid only $700).  ONLINE Bidding for the piece through KC Auction Company and running through noon 6/19/19.
